Public meeting set to discuss bylaws - North Star Newspaper Article
This quote from Mayor Conn is scaring the residents. People are now afraid to attend the Saturday, July 12th Meeting at 9:00 a.m. for fear of this quote:
Mr. Conn said there was nothing democratic about the protest and public meeting because it didn't include debate and dialogue, but ranting, raving and "using the mayor as a punching bag". He said that although criticism comes with being in public office, it didn't include the comments made at the public meeting .
"I have no respect for the people who organized it,"he said. "I'm not going to waste my time on getting mad, but I'm pretty good at getting even and I will get even and I'll do it right without signs and bullhorns."
People have been telling me they are afraid to voice their opinions, afraid of Conn, who has hired his own son as By-Law Officer to get revenge on everyone who seeks to protect their property rights.

Mr. Conn appears to be suffering from a misapperhension. He keeps thinking of his seat as Mayor as the position of CEO. I was at the meeting where he made these comments, and I can't help but feel that he was quite lucky in that he mentioned these things at the end of the meeting. from 7pm- 830 pm there were roughly 40-60 people in attendance, but once the announcement regarding the public meeting had been made, most thought that during the rest of the meeting nothing else would be said. Near to 9- 930 council gave it's reports. Before Mr. Conn gave his report, Councillor Sainsbury read a letter that he intends to send out through the North Lake Joe Association. In his speech he said he also thought that the protest was a disgusting spectacle. he then proceeded to try to scare the mainly seasonal residents in wards 4 & 6 that the locals were ganging up on them, and that they need to act to protect themselves. He claims in the letter to not want to see a rift occur, but that is in reality the PURPOSE of the letter. As of Wed. morning, Councillor Sainsbury had not filed a copy with the Township.
Council has deluded themselves into believing that the seasonals are not following this debate, and that those that have, and disagree, are simply "misinformed". They truly believe that in the summer the seasonals will come to their rescue. In reality, this is an issue that affects us all, and both groups are very upset.
I truly hope that Mr. Conn does not begin to "get even" by abusing his authority or the authority of those under him. However, if he does, our best defense is to let as many people know of his actions as possible. Instead of hiding from the meeting, we need to come in full force. Get everyone you know, and everyone they can find to come to this meeting.
That is our best option. Fighting one-on-one with the council will let them target you. As a group, we will be able to protect ourselves. we are currently in the process of putting together a ratepayer's group that will represent all groups. details to follow soon

Yes, you are absolutely right. I will tell everyone I know, or ever knew and send them the website link. Councillor Sainsbury must not send that letter, it is an outright lie that the residents are against seasonal residents. We need the seasonal residents, and they need us also, or there would be nothing to visit on their vacations and no services available.
